For more than four decades, Jerry Weldon has been a defining presence on the New York jazz scene. A leading voice of modern Soul Jazz, he carries the hard-swinging tenor tradition of Dexter Gordon, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt into the present — powerful, expressive and full of energy, yet always refined and deeply rooted in swing.
Weldon has performed with legends such as Lionel Hampton, George Benson, Jimmy Cobb, Roy Haynes, Mel Tormé, Cedar Walton and Joey DeFrancesco. Since 1990, he has been a featured soloist in the band of Harry Connick Jr., touring internationally.
For his European tour, he is joined by an outstanding rhythm section:
Giorgos Antoniou (bass), one of the most sought-after bassists on the international scene;
Xaver Hellmeier (drums), internationally recognized and featured in the USA Jazz Charts;
Julian Schmidt (piano), one of Europe’s emerging voices on the instrument.
An evening with Jerry Weldon is not nostalgia — it is living New York jazz: direct, warm, virtuosic and deeply soulful.read more... read less
